About us

History

The team led by Professor Vinícius Cantarelli was initially focused on evaluating the effects of using ractopamine in pig production. Since that time, the objective has been to create and conduct research with real applicability in the field. Even while working with a different research line, opportunities arose to evaluate the effects of certain additives in the face of a future challenge for the production chain, the restriction on the use of antimicrobials.

In light of this scenario, in 2012, there was a redirection of the team led by Professor Vinícius Cantarelli. From this year onwards, the team would de dedicated to studying the intestinal health of pigs. Thus, the Animal Science and Intestinal Health (ASIH) research line was born, formed by post and undergraduate students of animal science, agronomy, or veterinary medicine who, together, aimed at a single objective: to evaluate the effects of management practices, additives, and different strategies on intestinal health.

Since its inception, ASIH has always been guided by applied science, meaning conducting research with a final product capable of adding value to the pig production chain. Additionally, it is noteworthy that the training of professionals capable of applying science in the field has been another pillar that ASIH has aimed for from the beginning.

Aligned with the demands arising in the industry and society, the ASIH team has undergone new directions following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thinking about the group's communication as a whole, efforts have been directed toward disseminating results to the market, primarily through social media. Furthermore, the research focus has also been broadened, aiming not only at intestinal health but also at the overall health of pigs. The effects of additives, management practices, strategies, environment, health, and nutrition, on intestinal health continue to be evaluated, but now with an expanded view toward the entire organism.

Research line

Our research aims, in general, to evaluate different strategies that promote improvements in the intestinal health of pigs or facilitate the diagnosis of intestinal diseases. We always strive to adopt means so that the various researched strategies and solutions are easily adoptable in the field. Therefore, our main lines of research currently are:

  • Solutions and strategies to enhance the performance and intestinal health of production animals and ensure healthy and safe food for the population.
  • Use of feed additives with an impact on the intestinal health of pigs.
  • Adaptation of management practices to improve the performance and intestinal health of pigs.
  • Evaluation of non-invasive intestinal inflammation biomarkers in monitoring enteric infectious diseases in pigs as a way to assist in the judicious use of antimicrobials.
  • Evaluation of bioinformatics of the fecal microbiome of pigs challenged or not with enteric diseases in the finishing phase.
